SCHOOL CURRICULUM

Crystal County School is a family oriented school for children between the ages of 3 months and 10 years. The school has three sections, they are:

BABY WORLD
For babies between the ages of 3 months to 15 months. This section runs from 7:00 am till 5:00 pm Mondays – Fridays, Adult to child ratio is 1:3. Their school year is divided into three terms: January, April, May August and September December. Only federal public holidays are observed in the baby world.

PLAY GROUP
Early Years Foundation and Montessori program is used to teach our Toddlers 15 months to 2 yrs+. They are in our care from 7:50am-12:30pm. Parents may which to subscribe for after school hour care till 5.30 pm (an optional service).

EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION 1 - 4
A blend of the Nigeria curriculum, British Early Years Foundation Curriculum and the Montessori Curriculum for children aged 2+ to 5+ years of age. The section runs from 7:50 am till 2:00 pm. Parents may which to subscribe for after school hour care till 5.30 pm (an optional service).

GRADE SCHOOL
A blend of the Nigeria, British curriculum and a wide array of extra curricula activities for Pupils aged 5+years to 10 years of age. The section runs from 7:50am till 2:30pm. Parents may wish to subscribe for our supplementary learning program Leaders are Readers designed to cater for further learning experience outside the normal school hours Mondays Thursdays, 3pm 4.30 and after school hour care till 5.30 (optional service).

THE SCHOOL’S CURRICULUM
A pupil at Crystal County School obtains a world standard, first class education which fosters a firm foundation for future learning. Top priority is placed on seeing children learn right things, the right way in the right environment. Every aspect of learning is a gradual progression .The school uses a well-prepared Early Years Foundation scheme and Montessori Curriculum for laying a solid academic foundation for children aged 15 months to five years. The school also offers a wide array of extracurricular activities for pupils’ 5 years+ to 10 years in the primary section. There are five areas of the School Curriculum.

PRACTICAL LIFE
This area of the curriculum is designed to invite the young learner to act and work on real life tasks that foster independence, coordination, order and concentration. This is the area where the child may first choose independent work. The practical life area contains many attractively displayed objects familiar to the child, including a variety of items commonly used in the tasks of daily living, like eating, dressing and cleaning. These offers the child meaningful, non-threatening modes of activity. The materials are also carefully designed and demonstrated to help teach skills involved with caring for the environment and the self, to encourage responsibility, autonomy and to promote high self-esteem.

SENSORIAL
The basic sensorial exercise inspires careful observation and calls attention to specific qualities requiring identification of similarities and contrasts. The mind must judge, compare, classify and draw conclusions. These exercises tend to fascinate children because they are difficult enough to represent a real and meaningful challenge. They are then better prepared for future learning in math, language, and science and making sense of life’s experiences and information in general.

MATHEMATICS
The central purpose of the Math materials in the early years is to lay the foundation for later cognitive development and to prepare for the gradual transition to abstract thinking. The primary values of these earlier activities in mathematics are found in the way they transform ideas into actions on concrete materials. Pupils who learn math by rote method often do not have real understanding or ability to put their skills to use in everyday life. EYF pupils use hands-on learning materials that make abstract concepts clear and concrete.

LANGUAGE
In the language area we will find a large variety of reading readiness materials, including materials for phonetic analysis, word attack skills, spelling and reading, as well as materials for the refinement of motor control for writing. In the EYF Method, writing precedes reading, as the children explore with drawing and forming letters. The process of learning how to read should be as painless and simple as learning how to speak. The child begins by exploring the sounds that compose words and by relating them to the letters of the alphabet. He/ She can soon produce words and sentences free of all other mechanical difficulties. In the meantime he/ she train his/ her hand to become precise and sure for the writing movements. Reading is prepared indirectly from writing. The child starts from what he / she knows about the sound of letters in jolly phonics to the name of the letters (alphabets lower and upper case). Then we would have given him/ her the key to read all the words he/ she encounters. Reading skills normally develop so smoothly in early years classrooms that pupils tend to exhibit a sudden “reading explosion” which leaves the children and their families beaming with pride. It is important to mention that the school uses “Jolly Phonics Sounds” to teach letter sound awareness and diction for right use of grammatical expression.

CULTURAL WORK
Science is an integral element of the early year’s curriculum. Among other things, it represents a way of life: a clear thinking approach to gathering information and Problem solving. The scope of the early year’s science curriculum includes a sound introduction to botany,zoology, chemistry, physics, geology and astronomy. The Early years approach to science cultivates children’s fascination with the universe and helps them develop a lifelong interest in observing nature and discovering more about the world in which we live. Our educators introduce history and geography as early as age four+. The youngest pupils work with specially designed maps and begin to learn the names of the worlds continents and countries, mountains, deserts, oceans and rivers. They learn to treasure the richness of their own cultural heritage and those of their friends. Music and movement education is also an important part of the curriculum as well as the Arts. These offer children ways to express themselves, their feelings, experiences and ideas. We are very interested in helping children develop control of their fine and gross-motor movement.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS
Enrichment programs are extracurricular activities specially developed and tailored to meet each child’s individual need. Enrichment programs available at CCS include: SWIMMING: Learning to swim is so important for children because it helps them to keep safe around water and keeps them fit and healthy. The children learn balance, stability and concentration. It is also a social skill that keeps with them throughout life. The children are expected to come in with their swim wear, floaters, arm bands, towel, slippers and extra clothing. Children without all these will be not be allowed to take the class.
TAEKWANDO: The benefits of physical exercise cannot be over-emphasized. Taekwondo means “the way of the fist and foot”. The Do is the important part of the word and it means “the correct way”. If learnt correctly, taekwondo is a very technical martial art which results in students learning how to generate maximum power in relation to their build and size. Watching the kids form their little fists and kick out those legs is a site to behold. The outfits can be purchased at the school from the instructor.
BALLET/DANCE: This activity develops in our little girls grace, elegance and poise. Their angelic faces glow with happiness and excitement as they dance in their lovely tutus would make your day. Every term, the dance instructors teach the pupils ( boys and girls) different dance routine that ranges from contemporary African dance, salsa, disco, hip-pop, gum boot, Mexican dance, Indian dance to mention a few.
MUSIC: Music is a creative ensemble that seeks to engage the senses and fosters team spirit. In this class the children are taught how to play musical instruments like the piano, string instruments such as Violin, Guitar, Wind instruments such as Recorders, Saxophone and Drums. They are also taught theoretical music to enable them sight read and sight play musical notations.
FRENCH CLINIC: it’s never too early to introduce the child to language. Children are most sensitive to language acquisition from birth to 6 years. The children are introduced to French class as from 4 years. The pupils will be taught the language and would also go on field visits where they will be required to use the language. Parents are encouraged to learn with their children or surround the children with people who speak the language so as to reinforce the child’s learning. Other languages to be introduced in the nearest future include Chinese and Spanish.
DRAMA: This is an exciting program that makes use of the elements of theater-from imagination to presentation. Storytelling techniques will also be used to engage the senses and imagination, forcing the child to develop his/her own natural ability. Creative play enhances the development of fine and gross motor skills as the balance, coordinate, isolate and move to different rhythms and act out roles. This program is also very important for children who are shy. Performing in front of a crowd can be very daunting but during rehearsals the children grow in confidence as their skills improve. They also develop their personal rhythm and poise as they learn to listen and interpret roles in their own way.
MATHS CAMP: This is a program for children who need a little extra help with their numbers work/ mathematical and logical t h i n k i n g s k i l l s . Experienced educators in the nursery/ primary section take this class that is sure to quick produce results.
MAD SCIENCE: As its name implies, this is a club where magic takes place. The children learn as they observe and explore various scientific concepts and perform practical experiments.
LEADERS ARE READERS PROGRAM: The guiding principle for the leaders are readers program is the firm belief that every individual has the innate ability to optimize him/herself if given the opportunity to do so in the right environment. By laying emphasis on the development of self-confidence, social skills, problem-solving techniques and a willingness to attempt new challenges, our child-oriented strategies enable us serve the child, helping him/her achieve their potentials academically and socially. This program is held every term for two months at an extra cost from 2pm 3.30pm for nursery pupils and 3pm 4.30 pm for primary pupils.
